Day 14 #30 Days Wild - 'A poolside visit'

Today I wrote this, inspired by a visit to a wildlife trust reserve a couple of days ago.

A glistening pool,
A chance find,
as we approach, it appears alive.
Hundreds of wings, as panes of glass,
Flashing prisms when catching the light.

The pool is serene,
Lily pad covered,
Over each leaf, a damselfly hovers.
Delicate blues, some settle to rest,
Others gently alight and skim over the wet

A stalk in the mud provides a perch,
A dragonfly leaves, returns and is then off away,
But not for long,
It arrives once more with a mouth full of prey.

A glimpse of green or was it yellow,
Gone in a flash, to fast to tell,
In comes another,
With a fizz of wings, two briefly collide,
we stand transfixed,
As these giants race by

We could stay all day to watch this show,
But leave we must, and yet we know.
that all this happens at so many pools.
Just as it should be,
Beautiful wildlife for all to see!

Day 4 - #30DaysWild - a day with moths - oh and a shieldbug!

Last night Mr S set up our moth trap in our garden, this morning when I woke at 6.45am Mr S was already up and out sorting the trap, this is not unusual, I just roll out of bed to take the photos, Mr S does the hard work of emptying, identifying and recording. I can now recognise quite a lot of the moths after four years of trapping though I have to say that small brown moths are and probably will always be just small brown moths to me! they have to have a bit of colour or character for me to take any interest! so here are the moths that caught my eye today! - there were quite a lot! ...

Day 3 of #30DaysWild

A sad day today, our lovely lane lined with cow parsley is no more, the grass cutters were down this morning and this

has now become this!

so pointless when it is a single track lane with no junctions - last night when we walked along the lane the cow parsley was covered in diamondback moths, beetles and flies, I wasn't able to walk up tonight but I am sure that there will be far less insect life around now!

Anyway today the sun shone so I spent as much time outside as I could, My wild act from chosen from the 30 days Wild App was to 'get crafty in the sunshine' so I sat outside and worked on this,

it is now finished but I can't share the completed piece yet -
I also did some more gardening, and endless job but something I love doing, I bought a new Salvia today which is a great plant for pollinators so that is now planted ... and baby birds were about, 3 young magpies, a young robin. As parent birds are busy feeding so I thought I would give the robins a bit of extra food and put out a plate of meal worms on our bug hotel  from last years '30 days wild' well the robins didn't get a look in as the the jackdaws found it first! this was one of my instagram photos

Day 2 - 30 Days Wild

A beautiful day to be outside today, lovely sunshine but still quite a cool feel in the shade. I spied butterflies fluttering around over the common in front of our house, but I spent most of the day indoors - which included a visit to Gallery at 12 in Eccleshall, I took over 30 of my nature photograph greeting cards to add to the large selection of cards already available from the gallery.

After an incredibly relaxing hour floating around in a pod of salted water this afternoon I finally returned home in time to cook dinner, I spent as much time as I could pottering around the garden while the dinner was cooking, apart from a few bees and the birds I saw nothing to photograph,
To my relief though a wasp ended up in our hall so I was able to carry out another wild act from the 30 days wild app by 'saving a wild life' this was tweeted this evening and then after dinner  and before Springwatch we did get out for a short walk up our lane so I did manage to photograph a few insects - There has been an invasion of diamondback moths from Europe and our lane hasn't escaped them, hundreds of them flying around the cow parsley along our lane - so today's instagram picture was one of these moths.

I also then tweeted a 2-spot ladybird too but I still have an insect to ID, any help on this would be welcome!

Day 1

A gentle start into #30DaysWild, the weather is not great, overcast and windy, so very little wildlife about in the garden, plenty of birds chirping away, wrens and blackbirds busily collecting food around the garden for their chicks in nests - both in our hedge,  while great tit and blue tit visiting feeders along with collecting food in the hawthorns for their nests in our boxes! Other than that we have a handful of bees buzzing around our comfrey, which is my instagram pic  for today, currently I have 6 likes, goes without saying I would appreciate a lot more!!!
and from the 30 Days Wild app I have selected 'let it grow wild' as today's act, which involves choosing an area of garden to leave alone for the month and see what grows. This is the area we have decided to leave for the month

It had its last cut at the weekend, now will leave it and see what comes up over the next 30 days
